When we clean our home, we make sure that everything we can see looks good. That can cover everything from vacuuming or mopping the floors, running a duster over easy-to-reach surfaces and on a bright and sunny day, even cleaning the windows. Every so often, we may even go as far as to clean in those less obvious places where you can’t see the dust and dirt, but it’s there all the same – we’re talking about under the bed, under large pieces of furniture, the tops of door and picture frames, inside cupboards and a total head-to-toe clean of the bathroom or shower room, as well as remembering to change the filter for the HVAC unit

The problem is, despite all the cleaning, the house never smells that clean or fresh, well not like it used to. We have a question to ask you. When was the last time you cleaned or had your HVAC ducting checked? Just changing the filter won’t fix any problems that may be lurking in the background. Here’s a quick checklist for you which will help you to identify if you might have a problem with your HVAC ducting and that repairs could be in order:

• A musty smell coming from your air vents, despite having a clean filter – this could be a sign that the ducting has become damaged or come loose and dirt is becoming trapped.
• Your energy bills have increased noticeably – this could be as a result of holes in your ducting or even a problem with the HVAC unit’s fan, so best to get things checked out.
• Problems breathing – if you or anyone in the house suffers from asthma, a fault or crack in the HVAC ducting can lead to the introduction of impurities into the air circulating round your home and result in an increase in the instances of breathing problems.
• If you find yourself having to change your air filter more often than usual, this is usually a sign that all is not right with your HVAC ducting.
• Ducting is a great place for pests to hide and an unwelcome rat or mouse can make a real nuisance of itself – check for signs of droppings.
• Uneven room temperatures – this is a classic sign that there is a blockage in your HVAC ducting and that a “deep clean” is on order, or that the ducting has actually come apart.
