Why Replacing Your Furnace Filters Will Save You Money in the Long Run

With winter upon us, now is a good time to check your furnace filters, assuming you haven’t already done so as part of your ‘winter’s coming’ maintenance program. Unless your furnace is relatively new, the filters may not be functioning at their optimum, and if they aren’t doing their job properly, you’re going to damage your furnace. Nothing will happen overnight, but one day things can suddenly fail, and ‘for no apparent reason’, often that reason being blocked or faulty air filters.

The following are four good reasons why changing your furnace filters is a good idea:

    1. If air doesn’t circulate freely, the heat exchanger can overheat and a safety feature will shut the whole system down. Allow this to happen too often, and the heat exchanger will fail altogether. The cost of its replacement would probably buy you fifty new filters!
    2. Your heating system will last longer. With an annual regular maintenance routine and regular checks on filters and ducting, your heating system should run trouble free for many years to come. Regular maintenance ensures you get the minimum expected lifespan, and often many more years beside.
    3. If your filters are blocked or damaged, your furnace can’t operate at total efficiency. Fuel these days isn’t cheap, so any fault gets reflected in the size of your heating bill.
    4. Improving air quality. If air filters don’t work correctly, the quality of the air in your home will suffer, which is not good news for anyone in the household with allergies. The cost of new filters is small in comparison to the health benefits of clean air in your home.
