Avoid A Holiday Disaster At Home This Christmas

Drain BlockagesOne of the biggest problems with a plumbing system in any home is that it is hidden, and there’s an expression that sums the situation up perfectly – “Out of sight, out of mind.” Trouble is, just because you can’t see it doesn’t stop it from causing problems from time to time, and especially when asked to deal with more than the usual volumes of water.

With Christmas time just around the corner, many of you will be having guests over, either for a party, for Christmas day, or perhaps to stay for a few days. That can put quite a strain on an otherwise perfectly functioning system. So, is there anything you can do to avoid a total plumbing meltdown at Christmas?

Get your hot water system checked over

The simple answer is yes. Get your plumbing checked out in advance, especially when it comes to your hot water heater and hot water plumbing system. In the colder winter conditions, the pipes for your hot water system are subjected to a wider range of temperatures, and this can, over time lead to problems.

There are also a good number of things you can do to make sure all goes well with your home based on another expression – “Prevention is better than cure.”

Watch what you put down the kitchen sink

FOG – fats, oils and grease – can slowly build up and then once your pipework becomes blocked, it’s usually seriously blocked that will take more than a wire coat hanger to fix. Keep a tin can by your sink and pour any oils or fats into it rather than down the sink. If you have a waste-disposal unit in your kitchen sink, then don’t overload it. If you have guests staying, they may not have used one before, so don’t let them do the washing up, or you may find your sink out of action for more than a few days!

Watch what gets flushed down the toilet

We don’t mean that literally, but more a case of checking with any young children that may be staying with you that only toilet paper goes down the toilet. Make sure there is a wastepaper bin beside the toilet to stop temptation getting in the way of those who think it’s safe to flush things down a toilet in someone else’s house that they wouldn’t flush away at home.

If your water has started to drain more slowly from your kitchen sink, or your toilet gets blocked too frequently, why not give us a call and as us to give your home a check up for any potential problems before your guests arrive for the holidays.
