Chiller Basics

Smaller buildings can be cooled with simple A/C units.  Once a building reaches a certain size, it becomes cost effective to use a centralized chiller system.  Chillers are really just giant A/C units but function a bit differently because of their size.  Common chillers are located either on the roof or in the basement and are typically air cooled and water cooled, respectively.

Water cooled chillers use cooling towers and air cooled chillers blow air across a condenser, similar to your standard A/C unit, to remove unwanted heat.
