Time To Change Your HVAC Unit? Here’s Some Advice on SEER Ratings

It is always tempting to keep your old HVAC unit running until it dies, literally. However, with older units, energy efficiency is at a minimum at the end of its lifespan, and ultimately you could be spending more on energy than you would save with a new unit.

However, when it comes to choosing the right new unit, you will come across units which have a SEER rating depending on their size and capability. SEER is an acronym for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, and ranks efficiency. Translated to your car or SUV and we’re talking miles per gallon. Ultimately, the higher the SEER number, the greater the level of energy efficiency. SEER ratings range between 13 and 28.

As with most things today, buying a new HVAC will involve a level of compromise that will be governed by your budget. The higher the SEER rating of a unit the more energy efficient it will be, and also the more expensive. To calculate the energy savings compared to your current unit, and therefore helping you establish a budget, you can use NATE’s Annual Energy Savings Calculator or the Energy usage and Payback Calculator by Energy Star.

One final consideration is the length of time you plan on remaining in your home. An air conditioning unit’s lifespan can be between 6 and 16 years for a well-maintained unit. Once again, those with an longer expected lifespan will be more expensive, but can save you money in the long-term, However there is little point in buying an expensive unit if you are planning to move in the next few years.
