How Severe Weather Can Cause HVAC Problems

When the weather is at its worst, that’s when you really want your HVAC unit to step up to the mark and perform valiantly. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case, but a little bit of foresight can help to minimize the chances of things going wrong.

Take power surges as an example. When do you usually encounter one? When there’s a storm. What do electrical units, such as your HVAC system hate? Power surges, and regrettably they can put your whole unit out of action. When there’s a storm, consider turning off your HVAC unit using the thermostat, then turn off the circuit breaker to double the protection.

There is always the temptation to cover your external HVAC unit to protect it against bad weather, and especially rain. Truth is, these units have been designed to withstand all weathers, and covering them over, especially when you are using them, is not a good idea. By all means cover them up when not in use, but remember to remove any cover before firing them up.

Also keep an eye on your HVAC unit during exceptionally hot spells, particularly if it is ten years or older in age. When the outside temperature rises, so the unit has to work harder to keep inside temperatures cooler. Be kind to your system and don’t set the thermostat so low it will struggle to perform efficiently.

Of course, there is always the aftermath of a storm, where your HVAC unit may have been damaged by flying debris, or it has been forced to remain in standing water. Our strongest advice in these situations is not to attempt to use the unit and instead call us to come out and perform a safety inspection. All engineers who work for us here at A&E Air Conditioning and Heating are fully qualified and highly experienced, technicians, so you can rest assured that if there is a problem, they will have your HVAC system back up and running in no time at all.
