Make Sure You Keep Your HVAC Condensate Drainage Pipe Clean

One of the problems if you don’t have your HVAC unit regularly serviced, is that faults can occur over the passage of time. Not everything that can go wrong with your unit is instant. As a result, while you may think your system is operating perfectly, the truth is a major problem is simply waiting to happen, only you won’t know when until things go really wrong!

The condensate drainage pipe of your HVAC unit is one of those elements that requires regular maintenance. Pipes, and especially those which are responsible for removing unclean water, have a happy knack of becoming filled with ‘gunk’, horrible slimy, discolored and smelly goo. The buildup is slow, but when the blockage becomes complete, the damage is instant.

First off, there is the damage to your home. A soaking floor that may not be spotted for several days, or discoloration to the paintwork on walls and ceilings can occur depending on where your HVAC unit is located. If the leak is small and slow, then often the first sign will be a buildup of toxic mold or algae.

Another tell-tale sign of a blocked drainage pipe is the formation of ice around your unit. Should ice ever appear, don’t delay. Switch off your unit and give us a call here at A&E Air Conditioning and Heating. We have skilled and highly qualified engineers who are used to dealing with emergency call outs.

If your system isn’t working as efficiently as usual, then once again this could be down to a blocked condensate drainage pipe. Finally, the humidity level in your home may be higher than usual, which may well be related to a blocked, or obstructed drainage pipe, particularly with a split air conditioning system.

One thing’s for sure. If you suspect all is not well with your HVAC unit, then don’t take any risks. Often it costs far less to get a small problem fixed than it does to wait until something serious goes wrong as a result of putting off the inevitable.
